Turn off the water first
Always shut off the water supply before you start — at the angle valve under the basin, or the mains if needed. Open the old tap to release any remaining water and pressure.
Gather what you need
An adjustable spanner, a basin wrench (handy for tight spaces), Teflon (PTFE) thread tape, and a cloth. Have your new tap and its washers/connectors ready.
Remove the old tap
- Disconnect the water supply hoses from the tap.
- Undo the fixing nut underneath that holds the tap to the basin.
- Lift the old tap out and clean the surface.
Fit the new tap
- Fit any seal/gasket, then sit the new tap in the hole.
- Secure it from underneath with the fixing nut — firm but not over-tight.
- Wrap Teflon tape on threaded connections and attach the supply hoses.
Check for leaks
Turn the water back on slowly and watch all the connections. Run the tap, check underneath for any drips, and tighten gently if needed. A leak-free first test means a clean job.
Fit aerators and finish
Make sure the aerator is in place, wipe everything down, and you're done. Keep the old washers as a size reference for future spares.
When to get help
For wall-mounted or concealed taps, corroded old fittings, or anything involving pipework, a plumber will get a secure, leak-free result.
